Flag - Columbia 1979
" I'm very proud of Millworker, inspired by the interviews in Stud terkel's book Working. My mother and her family are from Newburyport, Massachusetts, right on the Merrimack River, which was in the heart of the Industrial Revolution in this country. The Song is written from a woman's point of view, and it came about when I woke up about 1 a.m in my bedroom, and walk downstairs to my desk, where there was pen and paper. it was a moonlit night, I turned on the desk lamp, and just wrote it right out in the time it takes to sing. It's been covered as much as anything of mine, from Bette Midler to Emmylou Harris. All the version are great. " James Taylor
Key Tracks: "Up on the Roof," "Rainy Day Man"
Quick Take: Full of songs Taylor co-wrote for the Broadway musical Working, Flag turns out to be a verb rather than a noun — it's a passive album redeemed only by his version of Carole King's "Up on the Roof."
